I am late to posting this announcement, but I am very very excited and honored to say that this March I was fortunate enough to attend the PEN Literary Awards where I received the PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers! This was such an overwhelming experience. The 2018 PEN Literary Awards featured the work of so many incredible authors and thinkers, including Jenny Zhang, Carmen Maria Machado, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and the late Ursula Le Guin. You can find the full list of nominees and winners here.
I am incredibly indebted to The Baltimore Review for publishing my story, "Zombie Horror", as well the Dau family for their generosity and for creating this amazing prize, to PEN America for constantly advocating for the importance of writing and communicating, to the judges for selecting my story, and for all the writers and readers that make this work and world better.
I was lucky enough to attend the awards with both my sister and my mother. And, because my sister lives in Tarrytown, a trip to NYC always means a trip to visit family. This time I was able to meet my brand new nephew, Calvin. Cal is named after my grandfather Calvin McCutchen who passed before I had the chance to meet him.
